Salvage Solitaire 01

I’ve been running ideas through my head on how to work the debt system in The Salvage, and I’ve also had board games on the brain a lot at the same time.  So the other day I decided to use a tabletop concept to help me work out ideas on distilling game mechanics down to simple systems that a player can grasp easily and keep track of in their head.

The idea I’ve sketched above is not the complete concept, but it’s a basic game idea.  It plays as a sort of solitaire board game.  A grid of cards are placed face down, and the player moves their avatar through the grid, revealing neighboring tiles and uncovering what is hidden within the tile they currently occupy.  The player has several types of tokens at his/her disposal that afford special abilities, but must be ‘leased’ from the game’s bank.  Having more tokens at the player’s disposal protects them against hazards, but increases the debt-load, thereby increasing the long-term risk of the treasure haul not being able to cover the cost of the debt.

My goal is to work out a simple game based on a risk vs reward mechanic, with the debt as an additional vector for pressure.  The debt acts a bit like a hidden enemy.

I still have a few ideas to sketch out on paper, but I think I’ll try to print and assemble this concept as a working board game prototype.  I think it will help me work out game mechanics better than mulling them over in my sleep.

Speakerboxes

Vaguely Halloween Post

A friend liked my Eljest mask sketches, and that prompted me to do a another set of mask sketches.  They’re fun, and help get my mind out of creative ruts so I’m happy I got prompted to shift gears for a moment.

Saddle Shop Field Trip

The other week I visited a local saddle maker by the name of Les Mason, who I didn’t even know existed until a friend told me to check him out (thanks Bob!).

He invited me over to check out his workshop and scrounge up some tools.  He’s got the usual awesome maker’s shop, with all sorts of gorgeous old machines and random objects scattered about.  He had several really nice old English saddle stitching machines, I wish I’d gotten some proper photos of them

I came away with a leather-working hammer, new awl, and an old awl handle.  He said he’s also got a good skiving knife stashed somewhere that he’ll try to track down for me.

Knit-down Boots

I haven’t posted any footwear in a while, and had these nice sketches just waiting for some rendering.  These are all concepts for boots incorporating a knit ankle liner that can be turned down over the boot collar.  I think pairing up materials which look and feel very different will look great in the case of these boots.  The non-reflective, thick knit ankle above the lasted upper with a panel structured form, from either leather or waxed canvas.

Speakerboxes + Nice Fabric

Some ideation sketches for speakerboxes, wrapped in fabric, similar to furniture.  Hoping to prototype these in the near future.  The main idea is that I think a lot of people would like to buy quality sound equipment, but wouldn’t be too thrilled with the black/silver aesthetics of most speakers.  It could also be a great surface to do screen printing, or perhaps simple line-art painting on top of the fabric.  Essentially joining hand-crafted sensibilities to home audio.

I went to Wildhagen for advice on textile sourcing.  They’re a fantastic hat shop that does really fresh designs.  If you live in Toronto you should definitely stop by their shop!

Foldback Collar Boot

Pinch-fold on the toe, and a padded collar that can be folded in two directions.

Heel

Quick pocket sketch of a heeled boot.  Fat tongue and asymmetrical laceways.

Desert Boots

A low cut desert boot, a bit similar to a chukka I suppose, features a partial lace cover up one side.

This second sketch was supposed to show some ideas I had for using fabric pinch-folds along the upper portion of the boot.  I feel like it’s looking too stiff though, blah.  There’s better stuff in the pipeline!

Laptop Died, I Did Not.

Hey y’all.  The past week saw a lot of changes, including moving into a friends’ home to keep things on lock, and my laptop dying rather suddenly.  This has delayed me from posting all sorts of things, and while I still don’t have a scanner in the new digs, I’ll be showing some fresh sketch work in the coming days.

Keeping with the recent theme, have a few more boots!  I did these renderings in Gimp.  For my first time using the program I’d say it’s quite excellent, and I have a suspicion it might be far superior to photoshop for pixel art, so we’ll have to try that soon.

Breach Boot

This is probably more keyed up than anything I’d want to make these days, but I do love tactical boots, and they’re fun to draw.

Monday Schmonday Boots

Couple more sketches utilizing the knit ankle liner idea.

Blue Boot, Blue Light, I’m Heading to Bed.

Pretty conventional cut, with pinch folded material at the heel.  Goodnight y’all I’m getting a snack.

Rainy Day Boots

It’s raining today, again.  Some slightly heavier boots to go along with it.
